Bishma Deva's Glories

Some good points on the glories of Bishma Deva from Srimad Bhagavatam 1.9.9 I heard this weekend.

Bishma Deva is lying on the bed of arrows after the Kurukshetra war.

  • Dharma cannot be learnt from the logicians as one logician can defeat the other with his arguments.
  • Nor can dharma be learnt from philosophers as there are 6 types of philosophies and each philosophy can beat the other with proof from Vedas
  • Neither can it be learnt from the Vedas because it is too cast and the discription are detailed. We may get lost in it.
The secret of dharma is best learnt from the lives of Mahajanas by following their foot steps.

There are 12 Mahajanas mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam by Yamaraj. They are Brahma, Naradan Lord Siva, 4 Kumaras, Lord Kapila, Svayambu Manu, Bhakta Prahalada, King Janaka and Bishma Deva.

Bishma Deva says the supreme dharma is to chant the holy names of Vishnu. He sang the Vishnu Sahasranama that we so fondly hear version sung by M.S. Subhulakshmi.
